George Melvin Schwartz was born on September 23, 1892 in Oakfield, Wisconsin. He earned his B.A. in 1915 and M.A. in 1916 from the University of Wisconsin. He was awarded his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1923. In 1919, he joined the faculty at the University of Minnesota as an instructor of geology and mineralogy.
